The Solar panels produce Energy.All buildings need Energy to operate (except for Energy producing buildings). Probably the best way to gather energy is by collecting sunlight and transforming it into electricity. Here Solar panels come-in. Their special surface is designed in such a way that it makes the most of the available sunlight. With each level of upgrade, the surface of the solar panels increases and so does the Energy which they obtain.

Panels are good for gathering Energy for a smaller colony, but at a later stage the panels will not be enough. You will need a bigger source of Energy like the Nuclear plant.
